Presentation Skills
- Delivery of a pre-prepared presentation on a subject of the participant's choice, related to their professional context.
N.B. The duration of each participant's presentation will depend on the length of the course and the number of attendees. Eight is the ideal class size.
- Comprehensive one-to-one and group feedback
Preparing a Presentation
- Key questions the presenter should address in advance:
- Why me? (Why am I the right person to present?)
- Logistics of what, where, when, how – and how long?
- Understanding how the answers to these questions influence the structure of the presentation
- Structuring the content:
- Research – ensuring a deep understanding of the subject
- Organizing the content logically
- Creating and utilizing complementary visual aids
Preparing the Presenter
- The presenter’s three fundamental communication tools:
- Verbal – the specific words used, while avoiding slang and jargon
- Vocal – the tone and sound of the voice, minimizing distracting verbal tics or unnatural pacing
- Visual – the presenter’s appearance, including dress, mannerisms, and overall presence
- Rehearsing the presentation – and seeking honest feedback from a trusted source
- Managing nerves and anxiety
Preparing the Environment
- Room layouts – and how they communicate underlying messages to the audience
- Utilizing the physical space to enhance the overall presentation experience
Presentation Skills – Revisited
- Delivery of another presentation (after an appropriate preparation period).
N.B. This may be the same presentation as in the first module, but refined following the detailed feedback received.
