PECB ISO 9001 Certification Path and Requirements

Upon passing the examination, candidates can apply for one of four professional credentials based on their overall experience level. All designations require a pass on the PECB Certified ISO 9001 Lead Auditor Exam (or an approved equivalent) and the signature of the PECB Code of Ethics.

1. Certified ISO 9001 Provisional Auditor

This designation is suitable for individuals new to the field who have a strong theoretical foundation in quality management but lack practical field experience.

  • Exam Requirement: Pass the PECB Certified ISO 9001 Lead Auditor Exam (or equivalent)

  • Professional Experience: No minimum experience required

  • Audit/Project Experience: No specific audit or project hours required

  • Additional Requirement: Sign the PECB Code of Ethics

2. Certified ISO 9001 Auditor

Intended for professionals with foundational experience in quality management and audit environments.

  • Exam Requirement: Pass the PECB Certified ISO 9001 Lead Auditor Exam (or equivalent)

  • Professional Experience: Two years in total, including at least one year in Quality Management

  • Audit/Project Experience: A minimum of 200 hours in qualifying project and audit activities

  • Additional Requirement: Sign the PECB Code of Ethics

3. Certified ISO 9001 Lead Auditor

The standard credential for seasoned professionals fully qualified to plan, execute, and lead QMS audit teams.

  • Exam Requirement: Pass the PECB Certified ISO 9001 Lead Auditor Exam (or equivalent)

  • Professional Experience: Five years in total, including at least two years in Quality Management

  • Audit/Project Experience: A minimum of 300 hours in qualifying project and audit activities

  • Additional Requirement: Sign the PECB Code of Ethics

4. Certified ISO 9001 Senior Lead Auditor

The highest tier, reserved for expert practitioners with extensive long-term leadership experience in managing complex QMS audits.

  • Exam Requirement: Pass the PECB Certified ISO 9001 Lead Auditor Exam (or equivalent)

  • Professional Experience: Ten years in total, including at least seven years in Quality Management

  • Audit/Project Experience: A minimum of 1,000 hours in qualifying project and audit activities

  • Additional Requirement: Sign the PECB Code of Ethics

Note on Qualifying Audit Activities: To satisfy PECB requirements, logged hours must involve active participation in the assessment process, such as audit planning, program management, documentation review, on-site auditing, drafting nonconformity or final reports, and leading audit teams.
